Stiffness modulus and Poisson’s ratio of soil possibility assessment on the basis of surface vibration acceleration measurements
Keywords: soil stiffness, stiffness modulus, surface vibrations, vibration propagation
The purpose of the work is to assess the stiffness of a sandy subsoil based on the analysis of vibrations recorded
on the surface of the 10 × 10 m test area. Field tests consisted of the measurements of vibration accelerations
at nine points distributed evenly over the assumed square grid. The light falling weight deflectometer
was the source of the vibration. Measurements of vibration accelerations were executed using measuring
system produced by Brüel&Kjær. The stiffness modules of the subsurface layers G0 and E0 as well as Poisson’s
ratio (ν) of the soil were determined in the test area on the basis of the obtained results. The method of
determining these parameters was based on measuring the time of passage of Rayleigh and longitudinal wave
between the measurement points. The possibility of using the proposed procedure for assessing the ground
stiffness in embankment was confirmed. The method can enable quick control of compaction of subsurface
soil layers.
