This paper presents two examples of a design verification, one for a flexible construction (dam) second for
a rigid structure (building foundation). In the subsoil of dam, there are soft subsoil (organic muds), while in
the foundation, there are stiff soils (clays). The geotechnical parameters in both cases were determined based
on the interpretation of dilatometer tests (DMT). Standard statistical analysis and analysis using the Bayesian
approach were used to determine the design parameters. Both approaches are possible to use in a numerical
program developed in frame of the NCN research project (N N506 432436). This program and its application
in determining the characteristic parameters of soils occurring in the embankment and foundation subsoil
are described in the paper. The design verification was focused on the dam and foundation settlements. The
validation of both allow to propose new empirical relationships for determining the constrained modulus, the
index of primary and secondary compressibility. The proposed validation will enable to use the DMT test to
a greater extent in geotechnical design. In addition, these relationships are more appropriate for the conditions
in Poland.
