Polyethylene wax influence on selected properties of asphalt binder and asphalt concrete
Keywords: asphalt binder, hot mix asphalt, polyethylene wax
The production temperatures of HMA reach 180–200°C (in the case of mastic asphalt – even 230–240°C),
which involves the use of significant amounts of energy needed to dry and heat the components, but also the
emission of harmful toxic and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. One of the possibilities of reducing the
energy consumption of the process is the use of modifiers decreasing the viscosity of the bituminous binder
in the technological temperature range, which allows the grains of the mineral aggregate to grow at lower
temperatures while improving the workability of the mix and reducing the temperature of its incorporation.
This kind of compounds includes synthetic waxes, which, in addition to lowering the temperature of MMA
production, increase its resistance to permanent deformations within the range of application temperatures.
The article discusses the influence of polyethylene wax on the basic properties of bituminous binders and hot
mix asphalt within the range of application and technological temperatures.
