MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF TURFS

Abstract: The laboratory measurements of rooted soils (turfs) for 15 years and 6 months old are presented. In case of 6 months old turf two plant species were used: Alopecurus pratensis and Phalaris arundinacea. To assess the strength values for turfs the direct shear tests and pull-out tests were made. Shear stress on the sliding planes oriented parallel to the surface depends on the dimensions of rooted soil sample, the plant species and the rate of soil deformation. The shear strength values of turfs increase with the increasing of deformation rate.
